Claudine P. Stein
Claudine P. Stein, 95, of Champaign passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Monday, March 13, 2017, at her home.
Claudine was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana, on December 9, 1921, the only child of Claude and Sara (Kingery) Perry. She married James S. Stein on May 7, 1948. He preceded her in death on November 7, 1992. Also preceding her in death were her parents and her son-in-law, Jeffrey Croix.
Claudine is survived by her six children: Susan “Sue” Stein (Doug Rose) of Tampa, FL, Jeffrey “Jeff” Stein (Mimi Rivera) of Mays Landing, NJ, Tina Croix of Champaign, Jarelle Stein (Zoey Pittman) of Lake Forest, CA, Anita Stein (Harvey Welch) of Urbana, and Andrew “Andy” Stein (Denise) of San Diego, CA.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Jennifer Croix, Michael Croix, Sara Welch, Brittany Welch, Brian Welch, Tyler Stein, Alexi Stein and Nicole Stein and one great-grandchild: Cecil Croix.
Claudine graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1939 as class valedictorian and went on to be recognized as a Bronze Tablet recipient at the University of Illinois for her outstanding academic achievement. She graduated second in her class from the University of Illinois, College of Law, in 1945 and in 1947 became the first female to open her own private law practice in Urbana, Illinois.
As a student at the University of Illinois, she worked at her parents’ restaurant, Perry’s Cafeteria, on Broadway in Urbana.
Over her lifetime Claudine was a generous volunteer in the community. For years she was a Girl Scout leader and inspired all of her children to be active in scouting. She volunteered at several local grade schools including Leal School in Urbana where she assisted in helping children learn to read.
She was an avid reader whose other hobbies included singing, playing piano, attending local musical theater productions, and playing cards with her fellow seniors at the Hays Center in Champaign.
She was passionate about education and was most proud of her family’s academic achievements. All six of her children and four of her grandchildren graduated from the University of Illinois earning multiple degrees, following in her and her husband’s footsteps.
The family would like to thank Lisa Sayavongsa and Claudine’s daughter, Tina Croix, for their years of devoted caregiving, which enabled Claudine to spend her final years in the comfort of her home.
A celebration of Claudine’s life will be held on Saturday, April 22, at 2:30 p.m. at the Community United Church of Christ, 805 S. Sixth Street, Champaign. Heath and Vaughn Funeral Home, 201 N. Elm, Champaign, is assisting the family with arrangements.
