Mr. Spencer was born Nov. 13, 1918, in Marion County, Ind. He passed away peacefully at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill., on Feb. 3, 2014. He was 95 years old.
Robert, or Bob, as his friends knew him, married his second wife, Norma J. Winfree on Aug. 10, 1968, She preceded him in death.
He had two children from his first marriage, a son Richard D. Spencer, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and a daughter, Sherry J. Foster of Mooresville, Ind. Through his marriage to Norma he helped raise her three young daughters, Kimberly A. Jones of Sesser, Ill., Lisa D. Spencer and Sanna G. Frazier both of Champaign, Ill. He was also a stepfather to Norma’s adult children, Sondra J. Harris of Marion, Ill. and Cheryl M. Green, of Hindsville, Ark. He had 4 grandsons and 9 granddaughters. They all survive.
Bob served his country in WW II in the United States Army as a First Sergeant. He was an expert rifleman and earned the medals of American Defense Service, European, African, Middle Eastern Service and Good Conduct. He was honorably discharged on October 2, 1945.
For most of his professional life, Bob was a salesman, owning Spencer Fountain Products, Inc. After his retirement, he was a greeter for 13 years at Sam’s Club in Champaign. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Champaign and the NRA. Bob was an avid fisherman, organic gardener, and cook. More recently his favorite pastime was bird watching, raising his canary, Buddy Boy, and growing orchids.
Bob was a man of unmatched integrity, loyalty, love, and care. He was a father to three little girls and a grandson that had no idea of what a real father could be. He was there when they needed a Band-Aid placed on a knee, when they needed a term paper typed late at night or when they needed to have the TALK. Thanks Dad! We Love You.
