Don W. Merritt
Don W. Merritt passed away at 7:30 a.m. February 7, 2016, at Helia Health Care, Champaign.
He was born on March 26, 1927, in Decatur then later moving to Champaign where he lived out the remaining years of his life.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 21 years, Beverly; two children, Carl Michael Merritt, Bradenton, Fla., and Deb Calliger, Muskegon, Mich.; three stepchildren, Rick Young, Chicago, Jann Taylor, Anna, Ill., and Linda Brown, Rantoul; grandchildren, Stephen Merritt, Illiopolis, Tracie Quinlan, Rantoul and Tyler Taylor, Anna Ill., and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Leila, and his parents.
Don spent two years during the Japanese Occupation in WW II and two years during the Korean Conflict, both in the Navy. He was a life member of the Champaign VFW 5520 and also served as Post Commander. He retired from the University of Illinois in 1965 where he was a Draftsman.
He played the drums and performed for many years locally and with friends at home. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals Ball Club, The Green Bay Packers and NASCAR.
He and Beverly spent many afternoons and evenings enjoying their back yard and grilling out. He loved working in his flowerbeds.
He is to be buried May 12 at 10 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery with a small graveside service and the VFW color guard.
