Elizabeth Ruth McCann

Elizabeth (Betty) Ruth McCann, 96, of Urbana, passed away Monday, April 13, 2015, at 6:50 a.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

mccannCelebration of Life services will be at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, April 19, 2015, at First Presbyterian Church, 602 W. Green St., Urbana.  The Rev. Deborah Owen will officiate.

Burial will be at noon, Monday, April 20, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana.

Elizabeth was born Oct. 23, 1918, to David and Nellie (Morgan) Williams on a farm near Cambria, Wis. She graduated from Cambria High School and Brown’s Secretarial School in Milwaukee, Wis.

She met her future husband, Wesley McCann, while they were both employed by the Regional Office of the Soil Conservation Service in Milwaukee. They were married on June 2, 1945.

In 1954 they and their two young daughters moved to Urbana where Wesley was employed at the State office of the Soil Conservation Service in Champaign.

Elizabeth was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana for over 60 years. She was a long-time member of the Carle Hospital Auxiliary and a charter member and former officer of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Chapter 348. Elizabeth had been a secretary at Champaign County Bank and Trust Co., Urbana.

Survivors include her daughter, Janet Lynn (Lee) Mears of Bloomington; a brother, Thomas M. Williams, of Cambria, Wis., and a son-in-law Pete (Barbara) Siems of West Lafayette, Ind., and three grandchildren: Janel (Brent) Neef, of Marion, Iowa, Chad (Stephanie) Mears of Waggoner, Ill., and Scott (Shannon) Siems of West Lafayette, Ind. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren: Kylie, Carter and Keira Neef, Kinsley and Callie Mears, and Luke, Liliana and Sebastian Siems. Elizabeth is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wesley; and her daughter, Phyllis Siems.
