Frederic E. Mansfield, Jr.

Frederic E. Mansfield, Jr., 85, died at 5:35 p.m., Friday, November 14, 2014 at Heartland Healthcare Center, Champaign.

He was born September 17, 1929 in Connecticut, the son of Frederic E. and Anna M. Potter Mansfield. He married Nina A. Fox on August 15, 1959, in Ludlow, Illinois. She preceded him in death on January 30, 2000.

He was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Lucy Whitney and Dorothy McDaniel.

Fred was graduated from Kents Hill School, Kents Hills, Maine in 1948, and from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine in 1952. After two years in the United States Army, he earned a Master’s degree in 1955 in Library Science from Simmons College, Boston, Mass. After a short time at the Widener Library, Harvard University, Fred was a librarian at the Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from May 1957 until his retirement in December 1992.

He was a member of American Association of Law Libraries, Champaign-Urbana Chapter of Amnesty International, Illinois Track Club, Kennekuk Road Runners, Champaign County Humane Society and Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church. His interests included reading, running and dog walking.

His funeral will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 19 at Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church, Champaign. Heath and Vaughn Funeral Home, 201 N. Elm, Champaign, is assisting with arrangements.
