Stanley P. Lathrop
Stanley P. Lathrop, 89, of Savoy passed away at 6:10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016, at Bridle Brook Assisted Living in Mahomet.
A family gathering will be held at a later date. Heath and Vaughn Funeral Home, 201 N. Elm, Champaign, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mr. Lathrop was born June 7, 1927, in Wallingford, Connecticut, a son of Stanley and Hazel (Wimpenny) Lathrop.
He married Ruth Williams on Feb. 4, 1954, in Unadilla, Ga. She preceded him in death on Oct. 25, 2012.
His parents also preceded him in death.
Mr. Lathrop is survived by a daughter, Sylvia L. (Brian) McDermott, of Savoy; a son, Frank L. Lathrop II, of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sisters, Florence Carmody, Grace Willhelm, both of Wallingford, Conn., and Elizabeth Bartlett, of Pittsfield, Mass.; five grandsons, Thomas Paul (Celia) Lathrop, Roger S. Lathrop, Andrew W. McDermott, Evan A. McDermott, and Thomas L. McDermott; and two great-grandchldren, Thomas and Trey Lathrop.
Before his retirement, Mr. Lathrop was employed as a safety engineer with Travelers Insurance.
He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Lathrop was proud to be a Mason. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Urbana.
His hobbies included studying Christian writings, astronomy, and gardening. He enjoyed volunteering at the Railroad Museum, loved animals, and enjoyed military history.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sierra Leone Ministry, in care of Little Church on the Lane, Charlotte, North Carolina.
