Kathryn Colby Kirchgesner, 74, of Urbana, passed away on February 11, 2016, at kirchgesnerCountry Health, Gifford. She was born on June 28, 1941, in Fort Benning, Ga., to Captain Ralph A. Colby and Clarissa (Milligan) Cullen. Kathryn married Charles H. Battin in 1964 and later married Charles E. Kirchgesner in 1979.

She is survived by her mother, Clarissa (Milligan) Cullen; three children: Robert D. Battin (wife, Lisa) of Kildeer, Ill., Susan Battin Zoll (husband, Greg) of Springfield, Ill., and Elizabeth Kirchgesner of Champaign, Ill.; six grandchildren: Ariel, Robby, Dalton, Stephen, Ritarose, and Louisa; three siblings: Dell Hershey (husband, Bill) of East Lansing, Mich., Georgia Cullen Llamzon of Springfield, Ill., and Stephen J. Cullen (wife, Pam) of Portland, Ore.; father of son and daughter (Robert and Susan), Charles Battin (wife, Shirley) of Oregon, Ill.; and lifelong friend, Sue Denton (husband, Robert) of Springfield, Ill.

Kay enjoyed many hobbies, especially gardening, sailing, camping, and reading.  She loved music of every variety, live theatre, and anything on PBS. Some of her best memories were from her summers at Camp Kehonka on Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, N.H. She had an adventurous spirit and was quick to make friends wherever she went. Her joyful, unforgettable smile no doubt helped with that.

Memorial services will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Illinois Public Media (WILL).
