William P. Harum

William P. Harum, 85, passed away on the evening of April 26th at Carle Hospital.

An ELCA Lutheran minister and chaplain for 62 years, after his retirement William harumcontinued to serve as a pastor in the Champaign-Urbana area at St Matthew, Good Shepherd and St. Andrews Lutheran churches.

He was a Cubs fan and loved puns, tapioca pudding, banana cream pie and playing with his children and grandchildren, who will always remember him for his game of “monster.”. He had a wicked slice in ping pong and was famous for making his opponents run to the opposite ends of the table. He was always up for a game of Sequence. He was gentle and kind with an easy laugh, a sparkle in his eyes, and an available ear to listen to whatever was bothering you.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Kathryn, his daughters Margaret Van Praag, Susan Harum and Cindy Wachter; his grandchildren Rusty Van Praag, William Van Praag, Paul Van Praag, Emma Cocatre-Zilgien, Philip Wachter and Anna Wachter; and his great grandchildren Jaden Van Praag and Peyton Van Praag.

A memorial to celebrate William’s life will be May 3, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 2200 S. Philo Road, Urbana, IL. Heath and Vaughn Funeral Home, 201 N. Elm, Champaign, is assisting with arrangements.

Our deepest sympathy to the entire family of Pastor Harum, who was our minister many years ago. We came to love he and his family dearly and are certain he will be greatly missed. His gentle and loving approach endeared him to each of us and many others. Our thoughts and prayers will certainly be with Kathryn and the entire family. They can be assured of our sympathies and continuing love.
