Maryann Peters Harris

Maryann Peters Harris was born August 2, 1930, in Seymour, IN to Loraine Geneva Cox Peters and Harold Charles Peters. Maryann graduated from Wiley High harrisSchool in Terre Haute, IN. Afterwards, she attended Indiana State University where she received a BA in Art and an MA in Library Sciences. She was also active in her sorority.

Maryann married Max L. Harris on August 28, 1954. Maryann and Max moved to Elgin, IL when Max started working for the Boy Scouts of America. After that Maryann had a series of jobs setting up new elementary school libraries in the Chicago suburbs. She began her career as a librarian and art teacher at St. Edwards High School in Elgin until the birth of her children, Stephanie and then Marcus.

At the end of her working career, she was the paraprofessional librarian for Garfield Elementary School in Elgin. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin, AAUW, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Elgin YWCA board. She participated with her husband in The Octagon Club, The Wandering Foxes Camping Club, Masonic Lodge, Knights Templar, Medinah Shrine, and volunteered with Visiting Nurses (to coordinate the filling out of paperwork.)

Later in life, she moved to Urbana, IL to be close to her son's family.

She moved out to Coopersburg, PA in 2013 to live with her daughter’s family for a couple of years. Most recently, Maryann moved back to Paxton, IL, to the Knights Templar Nursing Home where she passed on May 8, 2018.

Maryann is preceded in death by her husband Max, her brother Gavin Peters, her sister-in-law, Nelle Harris Davis, her sister-in-law Helen Virginia Peters, her brother-in-law Claude Davis, and her niece Linda Davis Sebring.  She is survived by nephews Bruce Davis and Gavin Peters, and nieces, Claudia Davis Pear and Suzanne Davis Rudman, as well as her daughter Stephanie Harris MacAdam (Russell) and three granddaughters, and son Marcus Harris (Linda) and two granddaughters and one grandson.   She will be greatly missed.

In lieu of a formal service, Maryann's family asks that you spend a day with your loved ones enjoying travel, camping or the out of doors, as that was a large part of Maryann and Max's life.  Any future church service will be announced thru Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin (www.holytrinityelgin.com) and the expected date would be July 2018.

In life, Maryann and Max loved camping and travel.  They often were accompanied by the ones they loved, including their dogs. (They even drove to Alaska twice with their 3 dogs in 1967 and again with just one dog in 1992.) Dogs have been an integral part of their lives and the lives of their children and grandchildren. It is in this spirit that we ask if memorials are given that they be given to a local charity close to her son’s family’s heart – GRRACE. The Golden Retriever Rescue and Community Education group is a Golden Retriever rescue that Marcus and Linda have worked with for 15 years. Memorials may be sent to GRRACE, Inc., P.O. Box 513, Plainfield, IN 46168 in honor of Maryann.

Condolences to the family may be offered online at www.HeathandVaughn.com.
