Roy E. “Gene” Cozad

Roy E. “Gene” Cozad, 85, Sadorus, formerly of Champaign, died Wednesday morning, March 28, 2018, at the OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center, Urbana.

cozadHe was born, February 16, 1933, in Villa Grove Ill., to Leroy and Florence (Kiger) Cozad.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Fern (Swallow) Cozad, three brothers, four sisters, two daughters, Patlynn Jameson, Georgetown, Ill., and MariBess Plummer, San Diego Calif., one grandchild, and two great-grandchildren.

He is survived by three sons, Gregory E. Cozad (Dawn) of Sadorus, Ill., Terry E. Cozad of Lafayette, Ind., Timothy L. Cozad (Teresa) of Hinesville, Ga., and a daughter, Diana S. Velazquez (Israel) of Lafayette, Ind., 11 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.

After graduating from Champaign Central High School, Roy served in the U.S. Army. He then returned home to make a living and raise a family. He worked for over 40 years as a block machine operator for Illinois Concrete Co. During that time he also worked for many years as a part-time night deskman for the YMCA. Since his retirement, he worked for Illini Lodge #17 and F.O.P Lodge #70 as a messenger until November 2018.

Throughout his life he enjoyed sports, especially the Cubs, fishing, bowling, playing euchre, family, pets, and people. He never knew a stranger. He will be greatly missed.

Visitation and memorial service will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Heath & Vaughn Funeral Home, 201 N Elm St., Champaign.

I am so sorry to hear about Roy. The few times I met him he was so friendly. My prayers and thoughts are with the family.
