Jane Howell Bergman

Jane Howell Bergman, 68 years old, of Champaign, passed away at Carle bergmanFoundation Hospital on January 15, 2014, from complications due to metastatic breast cancer.  She was born in Elyria, OH on January 14, 1946, the youngest of five children of Harry L. and Vera G. (Williams) Howell.  She married Lawrence A. (Larry) Bergman on May 24, 1969, in Erie, PA, and raised one daughter, Sarah Michelle.

Jane graduated from Elyria Memorial High School in 1964 and attended the M. B. Johnson School of Nursing at Elyria Memorial Hospital.  She received the BS in Nursing from Villa Maria College in Erie in 1974, and the MS in Community Health Nursing from the Frances Payne Bolton College of Nursing of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH in 1978.  She was a practicing nurse in Erie and Cleveland, and a clinical nursing instructor at the University of Akron for several years before moving to Champaign-Urbana, where she worked for the C-U Public Health District before putting her career aside to become a full time homemaker and mother.

bergman2She is survived by her husband, Larry, daughter, Sarah M. (Jared) Tolbert, and granddaughter, Kaitlynn Bergman, of Champaign, her brothers Harry L. (Susan) Howell, III, of Williamstown, NJ, David R. Howell (Barbara) of Vermilion, OH, James E. Howell of Dayton, OH, four nieces and five nephews.  She was pre-deceased by her parents and sister, Mary L. Howell Archer.

Jane suffered from a series of chronic illnesses throughout her life that she bore with strength and dignity.  She was an ardent traveler until she was no longer physically able, and particularly enjoyed visiting the countries of Europe as well as the southwestern United States.  She was an avid reader of mystery and suspense novels, and extensively researched her own medical conditions.  In later life, she became a sports fan, and enjoyed watching all sports on TV, particularly Illini football and basketball.  For the past several months, she was a resident of Bickford Cottage, an assisted living facility in Champaign.  The family is grateful to the staff and residents at Bickford for making Jane’s short stay there an enjoyable one, and to the staff of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Carle Foundation Hospital for their compassionate care during the final days of her life.

A Gathering to Remember will be held at Heath and Vaughn Funeral Home, 201 N. Elm, Champaign, from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, January 23, 2014.

The family suggests that a memorial contribution to a charity of the donor’s choice be made in lieu of flowers.

Larry and Sarah,

Rob and I would like to let you know you have been in our thoughts and prayers. We are very sorry for your loss.

Having meet Jane several times the thing that I admired the most is her strength! The love for her family, her love of teaching and her determination to be present was something to see!

We wish you both healing time and a strength you can find in knowing she loved you both.
